**Why promote “free messengers” instead of tolerating “WhatsApp”, for example?

Reason 7: Economic independence

  • There are no commercial interests of a “central” provider.

As a commercially oriented company, “Facebook/WhatsApp” wants, must and may earn money. The focus is on the interests and success of the company. Users are not “customers” but data providers who make their comprehensive data (and that of others) available to WhatsApp free of charge.

  • The system continues to function even if a provider stops.

Facebook, as the owner of WhatsApp Inc., can sell the system (including data) at any time, or let the WhatsApp messenger “die” in favor of another messenger.

This is unthinkable with free messengers, because the basis is public property. Anyone can use the program code and develop it further.
