Nostr is an open protocol developed to enable a decentralized and censorship-resistant social network—but messenger apps are also possible.

The name “Nostr” is an acronym that stands for “Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays.”

What can you do with Nostr?
In principle, Nostr is intended for publishing text messages (“notes”), but you can also publish other things with it, such as links to images or videos. This allows the Nostr protocol to replicate well-known social networks such as Twitter or Instagram.

Messenger

There are several messengers based on Nostr:

  • Whitenoise (external) / source code at Github (external)
  • 0xchat (external; with payment function)
  • Bitchat (with the additional function of exchanging messages via Bluetooth)
